Thursday

It's Recyclables Day, and a

balmy, rainy 56.7 degrees.

Yes: the blog is late: VERY LATE!

When it's a matter of baseball, I at least know who won; last night it was politics and all I learned is a lot more about Joe the Plumber than I knew before the debate! I'll be completing the blog in an hour or so, but right now

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day!

It began with an early-morning 'phone call from General Contractor Mike Tower to Dale Meszler of the Memorial Bandstand Committee; Dale relayed the news to DPW Superintendent Jamie Bechy and - by midmorning - a section of the Park nearest Park Place had been fenced off.

Vendors arrived soon after 10:00 and began setting up for their regular Wednesday Farmers' Market.

It was sunny and dry ...........

......... and Mike and the excavator
(you see, I've learned NOT to refer to it as a "diggy!)
began making room for the foundation of the Memorial Bandstand.

Watching him work, I kept thinking that my son-in-law would certainly like to have one of those machines to play with! What an awesome Christmas present that would be!

By 3:30 a considerable area had been excavated to to a depth of exactly four feet.

But then ....... a stump: a very large unyielding stump slowed progress.

Mike may or may not be back, today, to tackle the problem.
Here's a picture taken around 1875 showing several trees.
I bet he's found the remains of one of them!

Elsewhere ............ the sky was perfectly blue,
and I stopped on VanHyning Road to admire this view.

Sumacs everywhere are still magnificent.

Another golden maple - this on Brothertown Road - made a pretty picture.

I've been watching for this: there are two clumps of Monkshood on Bogan Road: one across from the Trevasani home and this, South of the little old house that used to belong to Mrs. Schwender. The plants aren't very large - the stalks are about two and a half feet tall - but the blue is so intense that the flowers seem to jump right out at the passerby.

I've been tempted, over the years, to snip just one tiny stalk to take with me but never have because the sap of the plant is very poisonous. To learn more, click on the image!

For Today

From WKTV: The storm system responsible for the soggy weather this morning will push to the east of CNY as the day wears on. As a result, we expect rains to end from west to east by later this morning. Clouds will hang tough through early afternoon but some breaks of sun will develop for mid to late afternoon. With a breeze, it will feel cool through the day. Temperatures will top off around 60 degrees by midafternoon.
Partly cloudy skies will be the rule for tonight but with saturated grounds we expect a good bit of fog after midnight. Temperatures will be considerably cooler tonight than last night. Lows will be in the 30's.
After a foggy start for your Friday, a mix of sun and clouds will be the rule. It will be breezy and cool with highs struggling to reach the lower 50's."
