Friday

*******************************

THAT WAS YESTERDAY!

Today it's clear and 36.7 degrees.

From WKTV: Good morning Central New York! Grab the light jacket or sweater heading out to work or school because it is a bit cool out there this morning. Temperatures are starting out in the 30s and 40s across the region. With lots of sunshine this morning, we'll quickly rise into the 60s by lunch hour. The rest of Friday looks like spectacular day with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. The weather begins to change on Friday night and Saturday, with a storm system that is going to bring showers and thunderstorms. If we see some clearing Saturday morning into the afternoon, temperatures will reach the low 70s and some thunderstorms that develop, could be strong. Skies should clear a bit later Saturday night and Sunday. It will be much cooler on Sunday, with highs in the mid 60s.

This fantastic weather has jump-started all sorts of blooms. These are the blossoms of a Norway Maple. If you get this close to them, you'll be overwhelmed by their terrifically sweet aroma!

White Trillium are blooming in the woods. If you're driving towards Clinton, be sure and take the Dugway from Route 12B - the hillside is covered with these beauties.

This Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is at the Behas' on Route 20.

Morgan's outdoor showroom is at it's most colorful!

I saw Tom a few days ago and asked if he had missed a single day of outdoor display during the past Winter: "No!"

***********************

Thanks, Honna!

Several people have asked why I said, yesterday, that I was "disappoined" with Robert Coppen's Unadilla Ramblings: it was because it wasn't a blog by Honna Bowen! I'm sure that if she ever decides to do one, it will be super!

and Thank You, Mark. That gave me goosebumps!

We all wish you the Best of Luck
in house-hunting and at your new job!

Work continues on the Townhouses on Madison Street.

People wonder, "Isn't the building awfully close to the road?"

Thursday

It's Garbage Day!

47.5 degrees.

".. slightly cooler weather for Thursday, with highs near 70 or so, perhaps in the low 70s. It will again be quite sunny. It will also be significantly drier on Thursday, with low humidity and a gusty wind. Fire danger on Thursday is high, so any outdoor burning anywhere is not encouraged.
Friday looks like a gorgeous day as well, with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees likely once again."

Speaking of the weather ....................

If you click this image you'll go right to Mark's website and then click the image again and you'll see that he's been singing Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies!"

"I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but theyre not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see."

THAT'S GOOD NEWS!

It was another great day, yesterday, and landscapers were slicking up the grounds at the Library.

A slow-down at the northern Village Limits caused by "ditching" along Route 12.

Not only did Jeannie Heidel tell me about the herd of buffalo over on Babcock Hill, she also told me how to find ELK on Larkin Road! ("Drive south on Rt. 12 and take the first left after the turn-off for Hubbardsville.") There's a very large fenced compound within which I could see several of these grand animals lounging in the shade and just this one out in the sun.

I'd mentioned the Dalai Lama's visit to Colgate University and that prompted a couple of replies: Mr. Louie C. Langone and his daughter attended the event as did Terry Tanner and her son, Matt. Terry wrote: "For those of us fortunate enough to have tickets it was a unique afternoon. The Dalai Lama is an intriguing man with a wonderful message and quick wit and it’s amazing to be able to listen to a man of his stature – we’re so lucky to have Colgate University provide this opportunity."

I had an E-note from a blog reader, yesterday, asking where the Woodford State Forest was and what had happened to "Tassel Hill." Well ................ Tassel Hill will always be "Tassel Hill" (with or without two "L's") but several years ago signs went up out on Route 20 at Janus Road and 'way out on White Street renaming a chunk of State Land.

I believe that her question was occasioned by a blurb on the front page of The Waterville Times announcing a new "blog" called "Unadilla Ramblings" by Honna Welley Bowen. That had intrigued me, too, so I went to the blog (correcting an omission in the URL given.) It's a neat blog, but I was disappointed: click here "Unadilla Ramblings" and you'll see why.

As if there's not already enough to do on Saturday, what with the Music Boosters' Bottle Drive and the Village Clean-up in the Morning and a Spaghetti Supper at night, you can also make a quick trip to Trenton Falls.

(Click the image for information.)
Trails will be open on both Saturday and Sunday from 9 - 5.

Also: "Riggie Fest" at the Aud.

Wednesday

Recyclables Day!

It's 52 degrees.

From WKTV: "Wednesday will again start off sunny and warm, with highs near 80. A weak cold front will push through on Wednesday afternoon and evening. This front will basically be "dying out" as it moves through, so some showers and thunderstorms will occur, but a significant amount of showers and storms is unlikely. A few storms could have small hail or heavy downpours. The front will usher in slightly cooler weather for Thursday, with highs near 70 or so, perhaps in the low 70s. It will again be quite sunny. It will also be significantly drier on Thursday, with low humidity and a gusty wind. Fire danger on Thursday is high, so any outdoor burning anywhere is not encouraged."

IN THE NEWS

No doubt some blog-readers were fortunate enough to have gotten tickets to attend the Dalai Lama's speech at the Colgate University Fieldhouse, yesterday. I missed out, but both the O-D and WKTV were there.

The DPW was out early, yesterday morning, hanging flags on all of the telephone poles along Stafford Avenue, Main Sreet and Sanger Avenue. What a pretty sight!

New decorations for the blogger's car - a birthday present from "The Kids!"

This wonderful spell of Summery weather is bringing out lots of other decorations, too: the magnolia bush on Mrs. Lamaitis' front lawn is covered with buds, just beginning to open.

This is going to limit some of our travels.

Bridgett Welsh, however, spent last week visiting the Mosemanns in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, and sent some pictures to share:

"We had a wonderfully relaxing time during our visit with Eric and Jana Mosemann in Boiling Springs, PA. Boiling Springs is a beautiful town just outside of Carlisle. Their town "square" is actually a lake! The Children's Lake (as it's called now) was privately owned, but in 1987 the Appalachian Trail Conference Land Trust purchased it so that it would always be preserved. The area around the beautiful old stone house at 400 Front Street is an official Wildlife Habitat. They had just stocked the lake the Saturday we drove through and there were tons of people out in row boats. We also visited an old-order Mennonight dairy farm where the Mosemann's get their milk products and a pretty impressive Amish bent & dent grocery store that is run all by generators!" (Thank you, Bridgett!)

(I went googling, and think that these "babies" are ducklings - not cygnets.)

Thank You, too, to Jeannie Heidel who sent this picture of a herd of buffalo.

Have Another Great Day, Everyone!

Tuesday

It's 45 degrees and clear.

Sunshine will start the day...and finish it on Tuesday. Temperatures should be similar to what we saw out there on Monday, with highs of 80 or so likely. After a quiet Tuesday night, Wednesday will again start off sunny and warm, with highs near 80. A weak cold front will push through on Wednesday afternoon and evening. This front will basically be "dying out" as it moves through, so some showers and thunderstorms are possible, but a significant amount of showers and storms is unlikely. It will usher in slightly cooler weather for Thursday, with highs near 70 or so, perhaps in the low 70s. It will again be quite sunny.

Two weeks ago we seemed to be running about a week late, as far as Spring blooms went, but now: we've leapt ahead!!

Tiny "Spring Beauty" and yellow "Turk's Cap" lilies - also called "trout lily" and "adder's tongue" - are in bloom in the Fuess-Cleary Road woods.

Forsythia bushes on Berrill Avenue are dazzling ........

........... and daffodils, either in rows at Grace Episcopal Church ........

............ or growing "wild" next to Buell Avenue, are at their best.

Yesterday

In the Park.

In the mail: an E-note from Kristin Strohmeyer sent to me on Sunday morning.

"Despite lost luggage, and a far earlier bus departure time than expected from the Keys, fifteen really happy and sleepy scouts and adults returned last night about 12:45am! Yippee! Can’t send you a picture ‘til JetBlue returns the bag with the camera, but from what I heard before we all collapsed last night (or was it this morning?), the trip was a phenomenal success."
