Charles Thompson, who grew up on the corner of Shanley and Gridley-Paige Roads, sent these photographs to me, yesterday.

Thanks loads, Charles!

Yesterday afternoon I had a phone call from Bob Conlan, who grew up on Sanger Avenue. His primary reason for calling was that he wanted Teresa Lutoborski's telephone number because the village that his lives in where he is a Trustee intends to built a Bandstand! (We talked about THAT for a while!) But we actually spent more time talking about Waterville and how attached so many people are to the village, and who always call it "home."

These three examples of just that were in yesterday's mail:

From Jan and Paul Fleischmann:

"(We) haven't written in a while but today's blog had some items of personal interest for us.
  • Happy Birthday wishes to Rhelda, a good friend of my mother's (Frances Fleischmann).
  • Congratulations to Ms. Lewis on "Waterville Passages" success. Jan's friend, Bev Gibbons, is remembered fondly.
  • Lastly, Paul has warm memories of a Milt Jannone. He was one of the finest teachers Waterville ever had. He literally made an impression on me (with a demonstration of a Karate chop that left me numb!). But the more important thing was the interest in history and learning that he instilled."

Lisa Rider Pardee wrote:

"I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say Thank you for all the great pictures. They remind me of all the wonderful memories I have of Waterville. I'm not that far away but at times the days fly by so quickly, I just can't get back for a visit. Your pictures are the next best thing,"

An E-note from June Richmond:

"I start my day with (the blog) and it makes me still feel close to Waterville and all of you."

Elsewhere in Waterville, it's 32.5 degrees and there's a shimmery frosting of white on the ground.

From WKTV:
(Thursday) afternoon, it will be mainly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Again, accumulations will be light and confined to hilltops mainly. Tomorrow night, a brief window of opportunity may open for lake effect snow. Accumulation is possible north and west of Utica. On Friday, after some morning snow showers, skies should clear out a bit and allow for a pleasant, but cool afternoon. Winds will diminish Friday night as a storm system passes to our south. For the holiday weekend, a mix of sun and clouds with low to mid 30s for highs is expected. Nothing more than a few snow showers are possible as well.

It's Garbage Day!

Yesterday was dark and gray - not a good day for photographs, but I did spot a small flock of Canada Geese at a small pond South of Route 20 across from the old Mayflower Motel.

Three more were enjoying a paddle out at Loie Zweifel's, on Hanover Road.

***********
Tom McNamara may have been the first, and now several others have seen Red-winged Blackbirds!

In re: the Electoral Tie that occurred on Tuesday with both Mr. Ostrander and Mr. Campbell receiving 68 votes for one Trustee seat, I talked briefly with Village Clerk-treasurer Lenard and did some "googling" on my own, and this seems to be the situation:

The regulation begins this way:
"In an election requiring a plurality vote, in the event that more eligible candidates than the number remaining to be elected receive for the same office or offices an equal number of votes, a run-off election to fill the office shall be held."

To simplify - it is not possible for both to serve, nor for either of the gentlemen to now withdraw from the "race." A Run-off Election must take place (within a certain period of time) UNLESS BOTH candidates formally, in writing, waive the run-off election process. If that were to be the case, then a local Supreme Court Justice would be called in to make a final choice between the two. (The old solution - simply cutting a deck of cards - has not been legal since 2006.)

On Tuesday afternoon the Bereavement Group that was initiated by Beverly Gibbons and Nancy Lewis celebrated its first anniversary. It was a milestone. Mrs. Lewis remembered sitting there, a year ago, just hoping and praying that someone would come. And they did! And when Bev herself passed away, Nancy vowed that she would do everything she could to keep the group going. With guidance by Hospice, that challenge has been met and a new name acquired: "Waterville Passages" meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1:00 at the Waterville Public Library ('tho their meeting in April will take place on the 4th Tuesday.) Anyone in this area who has lost a spouse or other loved one will be welcomed with understanding and consolation.

I just spotted this in this morning's Observer-Dispatch:
Jannone, Milton H., 86, of Clinton, died March 19, 2008. Arrangements by Owens-Pavlot Funeral Service, Inc., Clinton.

There was no on-line obituary. There will be many blog-readers who were taught (History, I believe) by Mr. Jannone and who have always held him in high regard.

Here's the forecast for today from WKTV: "Rain will break for a time Wednesday afternoon before picking up in earnest Wednesday night. Rain may be heavy at times. Flood Watches have been posted for much of the area. Temperatures should only max out in the low to mid 40s north and east of Utica, allowing for minimal snow melt..so the flood threat right now, while real, appears minimal at worst. Still, minor flooding is very likely as an inch to 1.50" of rain is likely. Rain may end as a period of wet snow Thursday morning, and a quick slushy inch or two is possible on hilltops across CNY. Snow may fall heavy at times in spots for a short time around daybreak."

At least we won't be looking at this much snow!

Doris Pavlot sent me this photograph of her grandaughter, Hallie, who lives in Carthage.

Main Street on a Spring Afternoon.

On Sanger Avenue, Marty Cleary had his flag out!

On Madison Street.

Yesterday was really bright and sunny. Although not as warm as it looked, there were runners and joggers and skateboarders out, everywhere.

The Winter Aconite is blooming in front of the Fehlner-Peach residence in Dicksville!!

However ...............

From WKTV: On Tuesday, clouds will gradually thicken up through the day. Rain and snow won't be too far away by evening, but it will take a little while for things to get going. Precipitation will begin as light rain and snow during the evening. But temperatures are expected to drop off once this occurs, down to near or just below freezing. At the same time, temperatures about 5,000 feet up in the atmosphere will be warming up. The result? An icy mix of sleet, freezing rain and rain is likely tomorrow evening. Only minor problems are expected right now, but some slick spots are possible tomorrow night, especially north and east of Utica, primarily on hilltops.
By Wednesday morning, everyone should be warm enough to change over to rain.

Madison Street

There have been plenty of Canada Geese overhead, but few have been landing in the usual fields. Perhaps that's because their favorite ponds are still covered with ice.

S. Bogan Road.

Interesting observation: last year, the first V's appeared on February 14th; this year on the 13th. Considering the addition of Leap Day, they were exactly on schedule!

It's Been Busy!

Weekend happenings included three fantastic performances of the WCS Musical, "Thoroughly Modern Millie," which was attended by just about everyone in town, it seemed! I hope that the students who were involved as members of cast AND/OR crew all had as good a time as the audiences did: they certainly did a wonderful job!!! BRAVO!

(I'm watching the WCS website to see when photos of the production are posted. When that happens, I'll add the link, here.)

A Corned Beef and Cabbage Supper at the American Legion took place on Saturday evening.

Even before noon, yesterday, folks were lining up inside the Fire House for Chicken BBQ.
Wayne Brouillette was "cooking" for his family!

The event was sponsored by People to People Student Ambassadors

who will leave on July 5th for two and a-half weeks

More external hard drive copies of our own sets of The Waterville Times are being processed, but I discovered that Tom Tryniski has added that huge file to the inventory on his website. If you're interested in playing with it, first go
HERE:

  • Then, up along the top edge of the page, look for the word "INDEX" and click on it.
  • A new page will open up telling you that you can browse papers - click the link "here."
  • Go to page 2 of the index and scroll down the left-hand side - you'll find an icon for The Waterville NY Times, 1855 - 2007. (Sorry, there's no direct link to this.)
  • Each reel of microfilm held two or three years' of scans, so you just have to make a jab at finding where you are in time.
  • To find 100 years ago, start by clicking on the icon for 1906-1909. Save yourself some time by looking for PDF file 626 ---- click on that and Adobe will open up and show you this whole page.
