I've just received the following E-mail from Mr. John Brouillette who would like me to share it with all of you!

"We are harvesting snap beans on Hanover, and there are a couple of areas that we could not harvest with the machine. Hence if any "blog readers" are interested in picking some nice Sparticus Green Snap Beans, they are welcome. There is a patch behind my house, a little walk is involved, but the picking should be good. They are great tasting beans.......of course I am biased too."

It's Big Trash Day!

69.8 degrees and sunny.

WKTV's forecast: "We expect sunshine through the day, with increasing amounts of it through the afternoon. Temperatures, provding we get enough of that sun, should hit the mid 80s. We do run the risk of at least a few showers or storms in the late afternoon.
On Tuesday night, a new area of thunderstorms is expected to develop in Michigan and Ontario and drop south and east into New York and New England. This complex of storms could become strong to severe overnight tomorrow night, bringing us some potential gusty winds and a period of very heavy rain."

Sandy Martin has sent the following "Crimson Bonnet" news:
"The Waterville Crimson Bonnets July get-together took place Thursday the 31st at 'Cavallo's' in New Hartford. Approximately 25 members were present. The food was delicious and so plentiful that many ladies took home doggy bags. Door prizes were awarded including two bottles of wine. After lunch some of the members visited Joett's Gift shop next door. We want to thank Joan Howard and Bev Prye for a wonderful time.

The August meeting will take place on Thursday the 28th at 'Michael's' in Waterville. (We hear that there will be dessert!) This meeting will be hosted by Lovina Staring and Pat Smith."

It's 61 degrees and overcast.

WKTV predicts that : "A weak area of high pressure will keep us high and dry for Monday and part of Tuesday. Monday looks comfortable and pleasant with partly sunny skies and a slight chance of a sprinkle to the north and east of Utica. As we go into Tuesday, the forecast becomes more complex. A cold front is going to move in from the west throughout the day. As it comes closer, the winds will be shifting to the south, ushering in warmer and more humid air. Ahead of the front, there is a chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening."

Speaking of Memory................

I had the priveledge and pleasure of dining with Marjorie Loftus Barnes and her son, Tom, at The Landmark Tavern in Bouckville, last night. Rear Admiral Willis Barnes' funeral had taken place on Saturday, and our conversation was about that event; the perfectly-timed "fly-over" at the cemetery, and dozens of other poignant memories. But then something completely unpredictable and delightful happened: also dining at the Landmark was a gentleman whom I recognized - Mr. Roger Gates, of Clinton. He stepped to our table to say "Hello" to me and I introduced him to the Barnes. Mrs. Barnes took one look at him and said,
"Roger Gates of Waterville?" and he said,
"Yes." whereupon her face lit up with an enormous smile and she said,
"Do you remember me? I used to be your Sunday morning baby-sitter when you were little! I'd go to the Episcopal church and walk you and your brothers and sisters home."
"Yes! Yes!" said Roger, continuing --
"And you always made peanut butter and butter sandwiches for me!"

(No echinacea needed there!)

It's 60.8 degrees

WKTV predicts that: "On Friday, we should remain rain-free. An isolated shower cannot be ruled out entirely for parts of the Adirondacks, but we really aren't expecting anything. We should see sun and clouds, and it should be pleasant, with seasonable highs in the low 80s. Clouds will slowly increase tomorrow night ahead of our next weather maker. A storm system will travel across the Northeast on Saturday, bringing widespread showers. The question marks we have are regarding whether or not we see areas of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. For now, we feel the worst of this system will pass to our south, but we are not expecting a very nice day for Saturday either way.
Our computer models continue to prevent any sustained heat from moving into the Northeast next week. We'll dry things out Sunday, with just a chance of showers at this point."

It's an August tradition: celebration of the Eucharist Sundays at 4:00 at the historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Paris Green.

From the History of the Town of Paris, chapter 41. "The Episcopal church was erected in 1797. That, too, was a very plain structure, and unpainted. In 1818 it was removed to the west of the church lot, and the present structure was erected. Val Piece was the builder, assisted by his brother; also by Roderick White and others. Russell Brooks, Eli Gilbert, and the Saxton boys did the plastering."

I received this E-note from Amanda Briggs, yesterday: "Could you mention in your blog about our Carnival? It will be held on August 16th from 12-3pm. We will have a bounce house, games, prizes, food, crafts, face painting, juggling and more! All to benefit the library.
We'll also have a picture of the latest Ralph Murray painting that he donated to the library to . This year's painting has a person painted in it, something I'm told is very rare. I'll email you that picture when Jeff takes it." (I'll be watching for it!)

A few days ago, when I was at Sharon Stiles' "fingernail palace," the subject of this intriguing sign - marking the edge (or end) of civilization - came up: "Where is it?" and "What does it mean?"


It's on Route 12 just north of Hubbard's Corners, next to a little dirt road - an extension of Ford Road - "X" marks the spot. The red line, on the map above, is just a small section of a line established in 1768 at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix. The line was intended to indicate the boundary between Indian lands and British Colonial settlements.

The pale, shaded area was set aside from Oneida Indian lands for the Christian Indians of New England who named it "Brothertown." Soon after the Revolutionary War, however, the direction of "the line" was moved and it ran, roughly, due south and allowed colonial expansion into communities like "Hanover," "Daytonville" and "the Huddle."

It's Garbage Day!

WKTV predicts that there's a "chance of storms will stay with us into Thursday...hit or miss...as an upper level system lags behind the cold front that will sweep through Thursday morning. By Thursday evening, this storm should be out of here, and we'll see improving conditions for Friday.
Major forecast headaches are expected as we go into the weekend. Saturday now looks like a stormy day. A storm system and upper level system will drag across the area, bringing what we think will be fairly widespread showers and a chance for a few thunderstorms. Then, the big changes take place. Rather than heat and humidity surging toward us, we're seeing signs that a large upper level storm system is going to park itself over the Northeast into Monday, bringing us cooler than usual conditions, along with scattered thunderstorms."

Wednesday

It's Recyclables Day!

53 degrees.

WKTV: "For Wednesday, we see a return of warmth and humidity. Highs will surge into the mid 80s and humidity will make it feel a bit uncomfortable. As a storm system begins to approach later Wednesday, it's possible we see a few storms. But a big change since yesterday has been the fact that we expect this system to slow down considerably, and we may not feel direct impacts until after Midnight and on Thursday.
As it approaches, we will see a period of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could be on the strong side with locally heavy rain. We'll keep you posted with more details as we get closer. At this point, we think the most unsettled timeframe will be from Midnight Wednesday night into midday Thursday." (I hope they're right!)

Legend says that he was a Native American herb doctor in the Massachusetts Bay Colony region and he used a special plant to ease the discomfort of a common disease known as typhus, or typhoid fever. So, the plant was commonly identified by early settlers as Joe-Pye-Weed.

"STARGAZING"

The Mohawk Valley Astronomical Society invites the public to an evening of stargazing, weather permitting. Members will share their telescopes with the public at Glimmerglass State Park, 1527 County Highway 31 in Cooperstown, N.Y. on Saturday, August 2, beginning with a program at 8:30 pm. Faith Thompson will present, “Celestial Fireworks: Supernovae!”
